COMPETITIONS

ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR IMAGES FOR COMPETITIONS, INCLUDING JUDGING CRITERIA AND SUBMISSION RULES

We provide guidelines to assist with the judging of competitions. Please read these guidelines and if you are judging on behalf of our club, please familiarise yourself with these recommendations.

COMPETITION RULES

GENERAL
1.1 Entry to competitions is open only to group members. Others may enter on an exceptional basis, such permission to be granted by the Committee.
1.2 Submission of an entry by a member is deemed to imply knowledge and acceptance of all competition rules.
1.3 The Committee's decision will be final regarding all matters relating to the interpretation of these rules.
1.4 Off topic or offensive images may be rejected at the absolute discretion of the Competition Secretary.
1.5 The Committee or any representatives are not liable for losses or damages.
1.6 Changes to Group rules can only be made by majority decision of the Committee. Members will be advised of changes SEE ARTICLES 3.6
1.7 Any Image which does not conform to Group rules will be liable to disqualification.
1.8 Competition entries quorum is 10. This requirement may be waved at the discretion of the Competition Secretary.

2. AUTHORSHIP & OWNERSHIP
2.1 All components of entered Images must be the original work of the entrant. AI additions or extensions are prohibited. At the discretion of the committee, members may be required to submit the original out of camera image.
2.2 Unless otherwise stated post processing (editing) is permitted.
2.3 Copyright – see 3.9 below.

3. SUBMISSION RULES
3.1 Entries to be submitted to the Competition Secretary as advised.
3.2 Competitions may be digital or print, to be advised for each competition – see separate submission guide. 
3.3 The number of entries are a maximum of three images on topic subject, and three  images of the member’s own choice. The number of entries for each challenge will be advised when entries are called for. 
3.4 External and inter club competition rules will be advised as appropriate.

3.5 Members are encouraged to submit their most recent images for Challenges (formerly merits) and Competitions. In the case of Challenges only images not more than 2 calendar years old at the time of submission will be accepted.

3.6 In the case of Challenges at least one entry into the themed section of each challenge MUST have been taken between the announcement of the challenge (either verbally or in the club programme pages on the website) and the challenge itself.

3.7 Challenges – images may be entered in to one Challenge only.
3.8 All images to be titled correctly and entered anonymously – See submission guide.
3.9 Members may add a brief description of no more than 100 characters to their entries in plain text in the email containing the image.
3.10 Images submitted to group competitions are entered subject to the owner/creator’s granting of a non commercial royalty free licence* to the Group to be used as the Committee sees fit, subject only to 3.11.
3.11 Members who do not wish their images to be used or published outside of the club membership must add ‘XXX’ to the file name: “example daisies-CHOC-XXX.jpg”. It is also recommended that ‘XXX’ is added to the IPTC ‘usage terms’ field under ‘copyright’.
3.12 Images marked ‘XXX’ in accordance with 3.9 will be judged but cannot be given winning places in any competition as it is the Group’s continuing practice to publish winning images on the Group’s and ACFAA websites, social media platforms and printed media platforms for the purpose of promoting the group.

4. PRESENTATION, FORMAT & SUBMISSION
4.1 See Submission Guide for requirements. 

5. JUDGING
5.1 Competitions and Challenges will be independently judged, unless otherwise stated.
5.2 Images will be awarded first, second and third places, plus Highly Commended places at the judge’s discretion.
5.3 As judges for competitions are booked their names will be advised. 
5.4 Off topic or offensive images may be rejected at the absolute discretion of the independent judge or Competition Secretary.

6. SCORING & POINTS
6.1 Competition Challenge points are awarded as follows:
1st 4 points
2nd 3 points
3rd 2 points
Highly commended 1 point
6.2 The member who has accumulated the highest number of points will be announced as the group's Photographer of the Year. 
6.3 A Best Improver award will be made at the discretion of the Committee to the member whose photography is deemed to have most improved over the year.
6.4 Monetary or other prizes may be awarded at the absolute discretion of the Committee, although this would be in exceptional circumstances only.


7. EXTERNAL & INTER-GROUP COMPETITIONS
7.1 Rules and guidelines will vary considerably and so external and inter club competition rules will be advised as appropriate. 

8. HELPFUL DEFINITIONS
8.1 Black and White: an image in greyscale – saturation values of between 0% and 100% black.
8.2 Monochrome: an image in the tonal scale of one colour only – eg saturation value of between 0% and 100% red.
